The Queen Schools Me
I have to confess that when it was suggested to me that I interview Christina Pirello of Christina Cooks I was a bit uneasy. Admittedly, I subscribed to the stereotype that vegans are militant about creating a veggie nation. Besides, the Queen of Veg was going toe to toe against the King of Steaks. That battle was already decided in my mind.
Well, let me tell you, the Christina you see on PBS stations across this nation is the same fun, down-to-earth Christina I met off-air. She doesn’t mind if we eat meat, so long as we don’t force her to do the same. But she does have a healthy alternative and a phenomenal story about how her healthy eating lifestyle came to be. In just fourteen months, Christina beat stage four Leukemia through diet and has been cancer-free for almost three decades! She took no meds, had no chemo or radiation, and no surgery.
Did you digest what you just read?
Let me say this again:
CHRISTINA BEAT STAGE FOUR LEUKEMIA THROUGH DIET! — NO MEDS, NO CHEMO, NO SURGERY!
Why isn’t her photo and her story all over every magazine in the world? Why doesn’t she have the largest bully pulpit conceivable? We can only speculate, or do what any good investigative reporter would and follow the money trail. I won’t digress on this topic, nor did we on air, because it’s way too long. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that we all need to investigate and advocate for ourselves and our loved ones when it comes to our health and well being.
I learned so much spending one hour with Christina and you will, too, when you listen to the podcast accompanying this post. You’ll also hear Frankie tell some fun stories about South Philadelphia’s Original Pat’s Steaks at Passyunk Ave. and Wharton St.
Now, let me tell you about the battle between the King and Queen. Frank Olivieri is the owner of Pat’s Steaks, founded by his great Uncle Pat. He also happens to be one of Christina’s former students at Philadelphia’s Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. He makes a fabulous veggie sandwich, that can be ordered wit or wit whiz, just like his world-renowned steak sandwiches. (Click here to learn how to order a steak sandwich like a Philadelphian.)
Frankie and Christina are cooking up sandwiches at Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philadelphia Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. $10 gets you in the game and a sandwich of your choice. All proceeds benefit The Christina Pirello Health Education Initiative.
Get yourself over to Pat’s Steaks and enjoy great grub and great people for a great cause! Or simply click the link and make a $10 donation!
