The Mezza-Mezz Girl

Colleen Carney is a Facebook friend-turned-real friend. She’s a hoot and a half. She has contributed to this blog in the past and was the first to respond to my request for guest bloggers this summer. I have really cool t-shirts for anyone who sends in a post or a recipe that I use on this blog. Just contact me with your submission.

In the meantime, enjoy musings from Colleen, the “mezza mezza” girl:

I’m Colleen, the mezza mezza girl.  1/2 Italian, 1/2 Irish.  I guess they didn’t look at me before then named me because it’s black hair and olive skin all the way.  But I have to say, it’s a really fun combo.

Ok, so first, growing up we had assigned seats at the kitchen table. My brother John sat across from me and kicked me constantly. My little sister, Gina, sat next to me and at the corner where my dad was the head of the table and he tortured her relentlessly. My sister Tricia was diagonal from me so not much action there. I was at the other corner next to my Mom. Mom would always sneak the lima beans and other stuff that I didn’t like off my plate when my dad wasn’t looking so my “plate was clean.”

Secondly, when I became the Mom, we sat down to dinner every night, there were no assigned seats but we all seemed to sit in the same ones. No one had to eat what they didn’t care for! Every night, at dinner time, I made everyone around our dinner table tell me about the best part of their day. Yes, as they got older, they spoke begrudgingly, rolling of the eyes etc, but as the laughter started, the next one had a story!

Thirdly, when asked by my Mom just a few days ago who would take over having Sunday dinners when she…(she’s Italian…you get it). In unison, and quite melodically, the family said, “Colleen”

Sitting around the table having dinner together is a PERFECT thing!!
